Generally, people buy computers with minimum amount of memory or RAM, for varied reasons, but the common reason can be that computers with the minimum amount of RAM are less expensive and so, appear to be a good bargain.
There can be another reason. Some computers can be of older versions and may struggle to keep up with the memory requirements of modern computers. In both the cases; the memory can be upgraded to enhance the performance of the computer, in a relatively inexpensive way.
When the computer is two to three years old and is a little slow in running the applications, then it is the right time to upgrade the memory. This would surprisingly enhance the overall performance of the computer and is a great alternative to discard the old computer and invest on buying a new one.
Additionally, by upgrading the RAM, the usable life of the average computer is extended by another two to three years. This can be achieved by spending only a fraction of the cost of buying a new computer.
The process of installing a memory upgrade is also a simple one and is as easy as removing the memory hatch if it is a laptop or removing the case, if it is desktop. Then, the memory module has to be pushed into the spare slot firmly and close the hatch or case and the computer has to be rebooted.
The size of upgrading the memory depends upon the utility level of the computer. For running windows XP, 512 MB would be needed. For photo editing along with the basics, a memory of 1 GB would be required. Memory upgrades can be done from many sources, from a lot of different manufacturers but they should be compatible with the PC or laptop and should carry a lifetime warranty as well.
